Ankle Pain and Chronic Instability
What is Ankle Instability?
Lateral Ankle instability is a condition whereby the ankle twists over, this can be an acute injury, requiring immediate attention. More commonly you may turn your ankle or twist your ankle joint when running, climbing or walking. It can be a regular occurrence and attributed incorrectly to weak ankles. This is not the case. Simply put damage can occur, even if it does not hurt! Pain can be the result of Peroneal tendon damage, Ankle Ligament injury or Joint and Bone problems such as Arthritis and Fractures.
How Do I Diagnose your Ankle Injury?
Typically a presenting history and physical examination, that looks at your biomechanics whilst standing, walking and running is required. We often scan your gait pattern with a force plate and advise further tests at that point, if required. Normally they are not! I sometimes use diagnostic ultrasound or request Plain film X-Rays to assist complex cases. Very occasionally an MRI and Surgical Consult is required.
